The
Endangered
Western Leopard Toad

The Western
Leopard Toad (WLT) is an endangered species
that lives and breeds in the low-lying regions of Cape Town,
particularly in the proximity of wetlands. Some
of these areas are
Kirstenhof, Tokai, Bergvliet, Lakeside/Frogmore Estate, Constantia,
Noordhoek, Kommetjie and Fish Hoek.
Due
to the onset of the breeding and migration season (late July
to September) the toads are most vulnerable. Road traffic is
the biggest threat, so watch the roads, particularly on rainy
nights, and don’t drive over toads as they cross the roads
to their breeding sites.
The
WLT (Amietophrynus pantherinus)
is also known as the Snoring Toad because of the male’s
mating call.
